Verus is a member of ATIEL, the Technical Association of the European Lubricants Industry. ATIEL was established in 1995 and speaks for lubricant manufacturers and marketers across Europe. It is a small room: 24 member companies, plus UEIL, which represents the industry's SMEs inside the association. Membership is open only to companies validly formed in Europe and registered or headquartered there.

The reason we want to be a member of ATIEL is technical. Working alongside ACEA (the European vehicle manufacturers) and ATC (the additive companies), ATIEL co-authors the Code of Practice that governs how an engine oil can claim compliance with the ACEA Oil Sequences:

• Code of Practice: the rules for developing, manufacturing and marketing an oil against the ACEA sequences
• Quality Management: the Letter of Conformance system and market surveillance behind it
• Industry Liaison: technical dialogue with vehicle manufacturers on engine design and what it demands of a formulation
• Base Oil Interchange / Viscosity Grade Read-Across: when engine test data earned on one formulation can legitimately be carried to another
• HSE, REACH and Sustainability: product stewardship and regulatory positions

For Verus, the commercial value is timing. Sequences move, and they move fast enough to strand product on a shelf. The 2024 ACEA heavy-duty sequences introduced a new F01 category with a tighter high-temperature high-shear window than E11-24, written to support fuel-economy oils in heavy-duty engines.

A brand that reads about a change like that after it happens spends the next year reprinting labels and explaining obsolete claims to its distributors. Reacting early is worth more to a distributor than any marketing programme.

Membership carries an obligation as well as access. Members undertake to participate actively in the association's proceedings and to commit real resources to it. That is a fair test of whether a company treats lubricant technology as a discipline or as a purchasing exercise.
